Why did my QR code stop working?

Most QR codes that suddenly stop working were dynamic codes whose subscription or free trial ended, so the QR company stopped redirecting scans. The next most common causes are a destination page that moved or was deleted, and codes printed too small, too light or with no clear border. Check what's inside the code first; it tells you which problem you have.

1. The dynamic code's subscription ended

If your code was made with a QR subscription service, the pattern holds that company's short link. When a plan lapses, a trial ends or the company closes, scans land on an error or a sign-up page. You can renew, or replace the code with a static one that points straight at your page.

2. The destination page moved or was deleted

Static codes work as long as the page exists. Website redesigns and expired listings are common culprits. Restore the page or set up a redirect from the old address.

3. It's too small for the distance

A code should be about one tenth as wide as the scanning distance. A poster read from 6 feet needs a code about 7 inches wide. See the size guide.

4. Low contrast or inverted colors

Pale codes, light codes on dark backgrounds and codes on busy photos fail on many phones. Use a dark code on a light background.

5. The border was cropped

QR codes need a clear margin, the quiet zone, about four modules wide. Designs that run text or graphics up to the edge confuse scanners.

6. Damage, glare or curves

Scratches, glossy lamination under bright lights and tightly curved surfaces like small cups distort the pattern. Use matte finishes and larger codes on curves.

7. Too much data, or too big a logo

Long links make dense patterns that are hard to read. Logos that cover too much remove data. Use a shorter link and keep logos within tested limits.

Find out which problem you have

Use the free QR code checker on a photo of your printed code. It shows exactly where the code points and whether a short link service is in the way.

Questions

Can I fix a printed code without reprinting?
Only if it's a dynamic code and you can still log in to the account that made it. Otherwise you'll need to reprint with a new code.
Will a static code ever stop working on its own?
No. It stops only if the page it points to goes away.
